Central Asia Climate-related security risk assessment
By: Anna Gusarova
Russian interests in Central Asia have consistently focused on security issues and economic cooperation (within CSTO, EAEC and CIS1 ). With Afghanistan post-2014 countering violent extremism and drug trafficking has become the most important area of interaction. Contemporary relations in Central Asia increasingly resemble the classics of game theory, including 'Prisoner's dilemma' and 'Nash Equilibrium'. While the players are not to cooperate with each other even if it is in their best interest, the 'prisoner' usually maximizes his own gain without concerns for the benefit of others. This phenomenon can be clearly reflected in Central Asian foreign and economic policies. In this situation it's quite obvious the Kremlin perceives this as a zero-sum game for influence in the region.
